POD-2 Pin On Disc Tester
The POD-2 is a computer controlled pin on disc tester used for measuring wear and friction properties of thin coatings.
SPECIFICATION
- counterpart pin: 5mm diameter WC-Co balls (standard), 1 ball holder. Other balls available.
- wear track diameter: 4 – 12mm
- load range: 2, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 100N
- friction force: measured from 0 to 50N via a load cell
- rotational speed: variable from 10 – 1000rpm
- accuracy: reading +/- 0.1%
- sample holders: various sizes available to be used with the following sample thicknesses; 10mm, 7.5mm, 6.35mm, 3.13mm and 1.7mm.
- computer control. The master program is fully Windows 9x, NT, 2000, XP compatible and has been developed using LabVIEW. The program has a user-friendly interface and displays in ‘real-time’ graphs selected by the user. Data acquisition using a National Instruments data acquisition board.

TESTING
Testing is carried out using a fixed ball counterpart against a coated test piece to measure the tribological properties of a coating.
Operator defined settings:
- R.P.M. to control the sample speed of rotation.
- maximum time. to set the test duration.
- maximum friction force. to set the maximum friction force at which the test will stop.
- load applied
- track diameter
Graphical options:
- time against friction
- time against friction coefficient
By measuring the amount of coating that is left (using the ball crater technique to determine the thickness of the coating within the wear track) the coating wear rate can be determined.
